An Istanbul stopover: a one-day plan from the European side

2 min read

Hotel Emirhan Palace Avcılar

One free day on a layover or business trip? Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar, the Bosphorus and a sunset to finish.

If you have just one day in Istanbul on a layover or a busy business trip, a good plan gets you to the city’s best-loved corners.

Morning: Sultanahmet

Take the Metrobus from outside the hotel, change to the T1 tram at Zeytinburnu and get off at Sultanahmet. The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern are all within walking distance of each other. Start early to beat the crowds, and when visiting mosques mind prayer times and the dress code.

Midday: the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar

Walk from Sultanahmet to the Grand Bazaar, then head down to Eminönü through the Spice Bazaar with its scents of spices and Turkish delight. The traditional lokantas around Eminönü are good for lunch.

Afternoon: the Bosphorus

From the Eminönü pier, take a ferry for a short Bosphorus cruise or cross to Üsküdar or Kadıköy on the Asian side. Seeing the skyline from the water may be the highlight of your day.

Evening: sunset over the Marmara

Ride the tram and Metrobus back and end the day with sunset on our terrace. Flying out next day? See our airport transport options and leave plenty of time at the airport.

Practical notes

  • Get an Istanbulkart for public transport.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the old city is best on foot.
  • Leave your luggage at the hotel and travel light.
