Turkish bath (hamam) for first-timers: what to expect

2 min read

Palace Spa, hamam ve sauna | Hotel Emirhan Palace

Scrub, foam, the warm marble and the peştamal: what happens in a Turkish bath, how to prepare and what to keep in mind.

The Turkish bath, or hamam, is a centuries-old ritual of cleansing and rest. If it is your first time, knowing what to expect makes it far more enjoyable.

Step by step

  1. Getting ready: in the changing area you wrap yourself in a peştamal, a thin cotton cloth, and put on slippers.
  2. Warming up: you lie on the heated marble platform, the göbek taşı, so your pores open and muscles relax.
  3. Scrub: a coarse mitt, the kese, gently removes dead skin.
  4. Foam: a wash with mounds of soap foam and a light massage.
  5. Rinse and rest: after a warm rinse, you rest in the lounge with water or tea.

Before you go

  • Avoid a heavy meal beforehand and drink plenty of water.
  • If you are sensitive to heat, have blood pressure or heart conditions, or are pregnant, check with your doctor first.
  • Keep out of strong sun for a few hours afterwards to protect your skin.
  • Leave jewellery and valuables in your room.

The hamam at Palace Spa

Palace Spa at Hotel Emirhan Palace has a Turkish bath, sauna, steam room and massage by appointment under one roof. A hamam followed by a massage is one of the best ways to shake off a long fair day or a long flight. See our Palace Spa page and ask reception for current hours and bookings.

Frequently asked questions

With warming up, scrub, foam and rest, allow about an hour.

What should I bring?

Ask reception what Palace Spa provides, and leave valuables in your room.
